When people ask me how to get into blogging for a living (or even how to break into other types of freelance writing when you don't have any clips), my advice is always the same: start a blog. No one will take you seriously as a wannabe pro-blogger if you don't have a blog of your own, but sometimes the effort that has to go into building a readership can be really off-putting for new writers, who don't want to feel like they're writing into a complete vacuum.
That's why, even although I don't normally advocate working for free, I found hellomagazine.com's proposal to incorporate reader blogs into their website an interesting one.
You'll find Hello's advert here. They're looking for bloggers who "have a passion for the celebrity scene, a real flair for expressing yourself in words, and the ability to do so in line with HELLO!'s renowned approach".
There's no mention of compensation here, which makes me think there isn't any, but as the blogs will be part of the Hello! website, you will at least have a big name behind you, and that could give you a better chance of finding readers right from the word go than you would if you were to start a blog of your own. Plus, "Hello! Magazine blogger" will look good on your resume, no?
Of course, you could just start a blog of your own, and have the chance to earn some money through monetization - or you could do both. Up to you.
